COLORS NOTEBOOK "My ideal city"

This year the Madrid branch of the Instituto Europeo di Design (IED Madrid) has decided to take on the COLORS Notebook project as one of their educational activities. The collaboration of creativity between the design institute and COLORS Magazine was presented by Gala Fernández as IED Madrid project manager at their headquarters on November 23, 25 and 27, 2009.

Over 200 multi-faceted and multicultural students are expected contribute their individual or collective Notebooks for a future exhibition and book. This time the theme is “My ideal city” and students will submit what for them is or makes a better city.  Anything goes. They will showcase their projects at the 2010 Shanghai Universal Expo at the Madrid paviglion.

COLORS Notebook was launched by COLORS Magazine in collaboration with the Pompidou Centre, Paris, and Reporters Without Borders, the association which sustains freedom of speech and defends journalists across the world.

COLORS Notebook is a blank COLORS; it contains 50 blank pages so whoever receives it can express themselves as they like in any way they want. Since 2006, thousands of COLORS Notebooks have been distributed around the world, to give voice to those categories of humanity no one wants to listen to.  Thousands of people, all different yet all alike, who filled and continue to fill their Notebooks with messages of creativity, imagination, desperation, anxiety, oppression.

Each COLORS Notebook sent back to COLORS is totally unique, with no filters, editing or censure. An issue in which anyone is free to tell their story and send a message to the world through their words, drawings or photos. An issue for sharing notes and reflections. A different way of really giving voice to “the rest of the world”.

COLORS Notebooks have been shown at the “Fabrica: Les Yeux Ouverts” exhibition realized in collaboration with the Pompidou Centre in Paris. They have also been exhibited at the Milan Triennale, the Shanghai Art Museum, the Shiodomeitalia Creative Center, Tokyo (2008), TYPOBerlin and Fabrica Features Lisbon and Bologna .

The collaboration between the IED in Madrid may expand to further workshops with their Barcelona, Milan, Florence, Venice, Rome, Turin and São Paulo educational branches… and of course to any person interested on the project!

He aquí algunas imágenes del taller impartido por Manolo Jiménez Malo y Gala Fernández del Área de empresas del IED a un grupo seleccionado de alumnos y ex-alumnos de diferentes especialidades del Istituto Europeo di Design de Madrid, durante la pasada feria del calzado en Madrid, en el stand del FICE y en colaboración con Barrabés.

Workshop Missoni EDL09

El mes de febrero ha sido el primero para la promoción del Eropean Design Labs (EDL) 2009, master de excelencia del IED Madrid, compuesta por 17 participantes de 11 nacionalidades distintas.

Gala Fernández realizó un taller de tres días de duración que contó con la presentación de Luca Missoni, hijo de los fundadores de la casa, Octavio y Rosita Missoni, que ha compartido su pasión por el tejido y los estampados coloristas con la ciudad de Madrid, y con los estudiantes.

Durante el workshop se utilizaron los trajes de una sola pieza de Missoni "VISITORS", que cubren todo el cuerpo, las manos, e incluso la cabeza. Estos “monos” forman parte de un proyecto experimental de Luca Missoni que es la persona dentro de la marca que desarrolla exposiciones en museos de todo el mundo con proyectos especiales relacionados con el arte, el teatro y la danza.

Estos trajes están confeccionados en un tejido de punto cubierto de rayas alla maniera Missoni. Tanto los realizados en blanco y negro como los que están llenos de color producen un efecto sorprendente, especialmente cuando se muestran integrados en el entorno urbano cotidiano, tal y como se hizo. Al mismo tiempo que se preparaban y realizaban las performances usando estos “Visitors”, los participantes en EDL’09 llevaron a cabo sus propios proyectos, desarrollando conceptos gráficos y visuales que se han presentado en un folleto y una serie de vídeos especialmente diseñados para la ocasión.
